Rose Colored Glasses

Mixed Media 36x48x8.5

I had a fun time creating this collage. It took about 6 months to complete as it evolved. Inspired by old magazines I found around my home and school, I started tearing out pages I found beautiful and that had a similar visual feel. I love fashion and felt collaging the images onto a large canvas would be a good start to something bigger. During the process I started seeing the images form a romantic vibe, which made me want to incorporate the female form to complement its feminine elements. Using a 3D printer I had access to at school, I created the female form from cardboard, then covered it in plaster of paris. To finalize the form, I sanded until it had a beautiful texture. Later on, I added flowing flowers and draped lace to complete the look. After all this, I still felt the canvas needed a few more fashion elements to finish the look. I loved the freedom to let the artwork speak to me and tell me what it wanted. I thought the name Rose Colored Glasses fit, given my desire to convey how we are meant to see the fashion world as perfect, feminine, and glossy, and how advertising uses beauty and perfection as a sales tool.
