Charcoal on paper 24x18

For this still life, I experimented with a new way of working with charcoal.  Instead of beginning with white paper and building up the shadows, I covered the paper in charcoal first, and then erased areas to bring the light back into the drawing. Working from dark to light made me rethink the importance of highlights, particularly how light bounces off objects.  This study showed me that removing the charcoal was just as important as adding it.
